LINCOLN, NE – The Omaha Lancers came into the Ice Box in Lincoln, Nebraska fresh off the holiday break in search of their third win over their rival, the Lincoln Stars. The Lancers currently sit with a 2-0 record over the Stars on the season, most recently shutting them out in a 2-0 win at Liberty First Credit Union Arena back on November 25
th.
The Stars were dominant through the opening 20 minutes of play. Even though the Lancers led in the shot column 16-14, Lincoln led on the scoreboard 4-0.
With goals coming from Kai Janviriya, Juan Copeland, Jack Pechar and German Yavash, the Stars had ten players on the score sheet through the first period of play.
After scoring three goals in the first 8:41 of the period, Omaha Netminder, Lucas Szyszka was pulled and replaced by Mikhail Yegorov, who made seven saves on eight shots faced through 11:19 of play.
The second period was more lopsided as the Stars out-shot the Lancers 21-6 for a grand total of 35-22. However, Yegorov stood tall, stopping 20 of 21 second period shots as Dashel Oliver redirected a shot from Copeland to make it a 5-0 lead for Lincoln at the 9:22 mark of the period.
The Lancers were able to snag a goal with just two tenths of a second left on the clock to pull within four goals as Jamison Sluys captured his sixth goal of the season. David Posma and David Deputy were on the helpers as Sluys and Deputy remain tied for point-leader for Omaha with 16 points each.
The Lancers dominated the Stars in the final period of play as Ethan Fredericks and Will Elger netted shots to pull within two goals, making it a 5-3 game. Followed by Sluys capturing his second goal of the night with 14 seconds remaining to make it a 5-4 game.
Omaha did everything possible to lock the game at five, but fell 5-4 to the Stars.
Two Lancers had multi-point nights as Jamison Sluys tallied two goals and an assist, along with David Posma tacking on two assists on the evening.
Lucas Szyszka came back in net for the third period, turning aside ten Lincoln shots on goal, completing the night with 13 saves on 16 shots faced. Mikhail Yegorov turned aside 28 of 30 shots faced in his stint of the matchup, for a combined 0.891 save percentage.
Yan Shostak completed tonight's game with 44 shots faced, giving up four goals in the process.
The Lancer will return home for a rematch against the Stars at Liberty First Credit Union Arena tomorrow night (12/30). Puck drop is set for 6:05PM CST. and can be caught on Mixlr and FloSports.
