OMAHA, NE. - The Omaha Lancers opened their season series with the Fargo Force at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. The Lancers came off a tough 5-2 loss last night to Lincoln. Meanwhile the Fargo Force came off a 4-3 shootout loss on the road to the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Lancers had won 11 of their last 15 regular season meetings with the Force coming into tonight's matchup.
The first period began with open play from both teams, that open play paid off for the Force early on, as forward Cole Knuble skated with the puck out in front to slip it by Omaha netminder Kevin Pasche to make it 1-0 Fargo.
The Lancers would later control most of the first period, as they kept Fargo on its heels with many opportunities on the rush. Fargo goaltender Anton Castro would be up to the task however, shutting out Omaha in the opening frame.
The second period opened up in the scoring department. Starting with back-to-back goals coming from Fargo.
Fargo forward German Yavash found himself on a breakaway early on, as he puts it past Pasche to make it 2-0 Fargo.
Fargo was not done, as seconds later it was Bret Link who corrals a rebound to cash in, extending Fargo's lead at 3-0.
Fargo's three goal lead would be short lived however, as Lancer forward Alex Bump found open ice to carry the puck momentarily before slipping it 5-hole past Castro.
Later on, Bump would be accessed a goaltender interference penalty, but it would not matter for Omaha, as on the ensuing Fargo powerplay forward Griffin Jurecki found himself on a breakaway shorthanded, he would shoot it by the blocker of Castro, putting Omaha within one at 3-2.
Soon after Lancer defenseman Nate Benoit would be accessed a slashing penalty, and this time Fargo would execute, as it was Leo Gruba who released one from the faceoff circle; making it 4-2 Fargo after two.
The third period opened with many scoring opportunities, and finally the dam broke once again.
Starting with Fargo defenseman Jakob Stender passing a puck out of the neutral zone before the Alexandria Minnesota native was hip checked, a bad Lancer line change enabled Stender's pass to set up Bret Link's second goal of night; roofing it past Pasche; making it 5-2.
The third period got a little chippy. as Lancer defenseman Mateo Picozzi would be sent off for removing Cole Knuble's helmet in a scrum.
The Lancers were not finished in the scoring department however, as Logan Morrell was able to wrist one past Castro off the draw, making it 5-3.
However, Cole Knuble would write it all off, with an empty netter to give Fargo the 6-3 win, extending the Lancers' losing streak.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow against the Force at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. Puck drop is 4:05 CST. You can catch the game on Mixlr or FloSports.
