LANCERS FALL TO FIGHTING SAINTS

OMAHA, NE- The Omaha Lancers would take on the Dubuque Fighting Saints Saturday Night at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. The Lancers would look to complete a season sweep of the Saints as the Lancers defeated Dubuque in the lone other matchup back in October by the score of 5-0. This game would also be held with heavy hearts as both teams would honor Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau. Matthew Gaudreau played for the Omaha Lancers from 2011 to 2013 when the 5'8 Matthew Gaudreau played with as big of a heart as the organization has ever seen; winning the hearts of thousands of Lancers fans. The Gaudreau brothers were taken way too soon from us all. Most of all, we in the hockey community will continue to keep our thoughts and prayers for the Gaudreau family.

In the first period, Dubuque would jump out on the Lancers early with forward Lucas Van Vliet scoring to make it an early 1-0 Fighting Saints lead. Shortly thereafter, defenseman Matthew Desiderio would score another for Dubuque to extend the lead at 2-0. Finally, Dubuque would conclude the scoring in the first period with forward Gavin Cornforth finding the back of the cage to widen the lead at 3-0 going into the second period of play.

In the second period, forward Heikki Ruohonen would cash in to put the Saints up 4-0. Mid-way through the period, the Lancers would go on the power-play and score on it with forward Mario Fate who would grab the first of his USHL career to cut the deficit to back within three. However, Dubuque would come right back with forward Michael Barron scoring back-door to put the Fighting Saints up 5-1 going into the third.

In the third, the Dubuque Fighting Saints would proceed to kill off some clock before skating away with a 5-1 Dubuque win. The Lancers will be back in action tomorrow evening to have their final home game of the season as they will host the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Puck drop will be at 4:05 PM CST. You can catch the game on Mixlr or FloSports with the voice of your Omaha Lancers Frank Zawrazky.
