OMAHA, NE. - For the final time this season the Omaha Lancers hosted the Lincoln Stars Friday night (3/22) at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. The Lancers had come off a setback on the road Sunday (3/17) to the Sioux Falls Stampede while the Lincoln Stars had been on a 6-game skid.
The first period would have the Lancers control most of the frame throughout.
The Lancers would eventually cash in as forward Sam Scheetz who continues to be red hot would receive a saucer pass from Nicholas Sykora before Scheetz would send a 'knuckler' past the out-stretched Yan Shostak to make it 1-0 Lancers.
Lincoln would hold the Lancers scoreless through the rest of the period however, Lincoln would get one past Mikhail Yegorov before the first would come to a close as forward Jack Pechar would get a lucky bounce off a Lancer stick before the puck would find the back of the net to knot it up at one goal apiece heading into the second period of play.
The second period would commence with the Lincoln Stars controlling most of the middle frame.
However, the Lancers would draw first blood once again as forward Nick Pierre would stick handle through the Lincoln defense before ripping it top corner-ringing it off the cross-bar and in the back of the cage to give Omaha the lead back at 2-1.
Shortly thereafter, Lincoln would answer right back off the stick of forward Justin Mexico who would wrap it around Yegorov to tie it back up.
During that second Lincoln goal, the Stars could not help themselves however, as Lincoln forward German Yavash would proceed to cross-check Mikhail Yegorov well after Lincoln scores their goal. Yavash who has had a history of throwing around cheap shots would be accessed a penalty after the despicable sequence.
The game would remain tied at two at the end of the second period of play but not without a classic Lancers-Stars brawl. German Yavash would of course be at the center of the scrum-proceeding to attack Lancers' Ryan Kusler. The officials would try and break it up, but Yavash would not let go of Kusler as Yavash would continue to throw punches through the linesman, and yet some how the Lancers would be short-handed out of that sequence. They would give Kivioja the extra rough call while Kusler would be accessed a fighting major along with Yavash.
The third period would have Lincoln put offensive pressure on the Lancers throughout, but Omaha would hold for most of the period.
However, Lincoln would find the back of the net late with forward Dashel Oliver going 5-hole on Mikhail Yegorov to make it 3-2 Stars.
The Lancers would get several scoring chances with an extra-attacker, but to no avail as Lincoln would hold on for a 3-2 win.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow night (3/23) at Buccaneer Arena in Urbandale, Iowa to take on the Des Moines Buccaneers. Puck drop is at 6:00 PM CST. You can catch the game on Mixlr or FloSports.
