OMAHA, NE. - The Omaha Lancers played host to the Sioux Falls Stampede Friday night (3/15) at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. The Lancers had come off an overtime win the previous night (3/14) against their arch-rival Lincoln Stars. Meanwhile, the Sioux Falls Stampede had come off a loss on the road Wednesday night (3/13) to their arch-rival Sioux City Musketeers.
The first period would have Sioux Falls playing sharp early on.
The scoring would start with Sioux Falls forward J.J. Wiebusch who has been a thorn in the Lancers' side all season long. Wiebusch would wheel to the top of the slot before firing the puck through traffic before finding the back of the net to make it 1-0 Stampede.
However, that goal would seem to wake up Omaha as Lancer forward Sam Scheetz would start the scoring for the Lancers as Scheetz would pick up a rebound before cashing in to tie it up at one goal apiece.
Shortly thereafter, Lancer forward David Deputy would skate in against two Stampede defensemen before sending a perfectly executed back-hand past Sioux Falls net-minder Michael Chambre to put the Lancers out in front at 2-1.
The Lancers would not be done in the opening frame as forward Nicholas Sykora would also skate through Sioux Falls traffic before finding himself on a temporary breakaway before Sykora would wrist one past Chambre to stretch Omaha's lead at 3-1 going into the second period of play.
The second period would have the Lancers buzzing throughout.
The scoring would start with defenseman Mikhail Katin who would score his second career USHL goal in as many nights after picking up a rebound to make it 4-1 Lancers.
Shortly thereafter, Nick Pierre would get in on the action after forward Bobby Cowan was able to out muscle a Sioux Falls skater before Cowan would send a cross-crease feed to find a wide-open Pierre to tap it home and stretch Omaha's lead to 5-1.
The Lancers were not done as forward Sam Scheetz would tack on another after receiving a feed down low before Scheetz would walk it to the net before backhanding it past the Stampede net-minder to make it 6-1.
Sioux Falls would get a slight buzz-killer to end the middle frame to help cut the deficit to within 4 at 6-2 heading into the third period of play.
The third period would begin with Sioux Falls pressing early on.
However, the Lancers continued to stand their ground throughout the remaining 20 minutes of the game.
The Lancers would eventually put another one in the back of the net for good measure, this time it would also come short-handed as forward Jamison Sluys would send a pass to Elger, before Elger would give it off to Leiberman who would then shoot one off the far pad of the Sioux Falls net-minder before Elger would be there to bury it; giving Omaha a 7-2 lead.
Sioux Falls would get a 'garbage time' goal within the final minute of the game, but the Lancers would prevail in a resounding 7-3 victory.
The Lancers are back in action on St. Patrick's Day this Sunday to take on the very same Stampede club in Sioux Falls. Puck drop is at 4:05 PM CST. You can catch the game on Mixlr or FloSports.
