OMAHA, NE. - The Omaha Lancers resumed the 'Cold War' Thursday night (3/14) at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. The Lancers had come off a weekend split with the Green Bay Gamblers last weekend. Meanwhile the Lincoln Stars were embarrassed last week in a three-game stand with the Fargo Force after being outscored 17-2 through those three games up in Fargo.
The Lancers would come out firing early with numerous scoring chances throughout the opening frame.
Later in the period, the Lancers would get a power-play opportunity after Lancer defenseman Mateo Picozzi drew an interference penalty.
During the power-play Omaha would cash-in as forward Nick Pierre wrists one past Lincoln net-minder Yan Shostak to make it 1-0 Lancers.
However, the Lancers would make a rather lazy turnover in the d-zone to give Lincoln forward and future Mike Hastings product Blake Montgomery a scoring chance from the slot as Montgomery would bury it to tie up the game at one apiece going into the second period of play.
The second period would have Lincoln come out fast early on.
Lincoln forward German Yavash would capitalize on Lincoln's solid out put in the middle-frame after scoring a very leaky goal from an awkward angle to give the Stars a 2-1 lead heading into the third period of play.
The third period would commence with Lincoln continuing to control the pace of the game.
However, Lincoln would not be able to capitalize through most of the final frame.
With just under three minutes to go in the third, the Lancers defenseman Mikhail Katin would find the back of the net after receiving a pass in front of the net to tie it up at two goals apiece.
Shortly thereafter, the Lancers would score again, this time off the stick of forward Aleksi Kivioja who would deflect it past Shostak after a slap-shot from the point coming from defenseman Noah Jones, and just like that its 3-2 Lancers.
However, Lincoln would respond with just 3 seconds remaining in the third with forward Jared Mangan cashing in to knot it back up at three apiece.
Overtime hockey would be needed, and eventually the Lancers would score.
After Lancer coach David Wilkie would call a timeout to draw up a play off the face-off it would be defenseman Noah Jones carrying it up the ice before cutting to the net and pushing the puck 5-hole to help cap off a 4-3 overtime victory over the Stars.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow night (3/15) at Liberty First Credit Union Arena where they will take on the Sioux Falls Stampede. Puck drop is at 7:05 PM CST. You can catch the game on Mixlr or FloSports.
