OMAHA, NE. - The Omaha Lancers concluded its weekend Sunday (1/28) at home against the Waterloo Black Hawks. The Lancers had come off a 5-2 loss on the road to Cedar Rapids while the Waterloo Black Hawks had come off a heartbreaking shootout loss to the league leading Fargo Force.
The first period would have Omaha on fire early on with forward Christian Kocsis scoring top-shelf to give Omaha the early 1-0 advantage.
However, Waterloo would get in on the action themselves as shortly thereafter forward Gavyn Thoreson would put one home after Lancer net-minder Mikhail Yegorov was unable to corral the loose puck to help tie it up at one apiece.
The Lancers would respond right back with yet another. Forward Nick Pierre would receive a cross-ice pass from defenseman Charlie Lieberman before Pierre would skate in on the breakaway; scoring short-side on Waterloo goalie Calvin Vachon to put Omaha back up at 2-1.
The Lancers would not be done as Nick Pierre would get on the board again, wristing another one past Vachon to stretch Omaha's lead at 3-1.
However, Waterloo would score once more as time expired in the opening frame, this time the 'Hawks would score off the stick of forward Teddy Townsend to cut the deficit back within one going into the second period of play.
The second period would have the Lancers respond throughout.
Lancer coach David Wilkie would draw up a difference making play out of the media timeout, with forward Nick Pierre wheeling a top the faceoff circle before Pierre found defenseman Trey Scott back-door to help Omaha go back in front by two at 4-2.
The Lancers would not be done as shortly thereafter, Rylan Brady would poke one past Waterloo's netminder to help give Omaha a 5-2 lead going into the third period.
The third period however, would provide a different story for Omaha.
Waterloo would come out fast with forward Reid Morich scoring to cut the deficit at 5-3.
Shortly thereafter, Waterloo forward John Mustard would cash in putting the 'Hawks within one.
Waterloo defenseman Tyler Miller would score later on; tying it up at 5 apiece.
Waterloo defenseman Landon Nycz would also score to put Waterloo ahead 6-5 before Omaha would pull Yegorov for Lucas Szyszka.
The Lancers would try and get something going with a Jamison Sluys fight, but to no avail. The 'Hawks would win it 6-5.
