OMAHA, NE. - The Omaha Lancers were back on the ice Friday night in a preseason matchup with the Lincoln Stars. The Lancers are looking to respond after a disappointing yet, encouraging end to last season. Meanwhile the Lincoln Stars would look to continue its success from a season ago; finishing third in the Western Conference, and would also make it all the way to the Western Conference Finals before getting knocked out by the Fargo Force in the 2023 Clark Cup Playoffs.
The first period would provide a goaltending battle between Lincoln's Yan Shostak and Omaha's newest member and former Sioux City net-minder Croix Kochendorfer.
The Lancers would control most of the period with numerous scoring chances coming from forwards Nick Pierre, Will Diamond, and Cooper Conway.
Later, in the first things would get heated as Lancer forward Ryan Kusler would get involved in a scrum with Lincoln forward Nik Young, after Young went after Lancer defenseman Tucker Shedd after the whistle. Shedd and Kusler would each get accessed a penalty, along with Lincoln's Young to give the Stars a powerplay.
The Lancers would kill that ensuing powerplay before heading to the locker room at a scoreless tie despite the Lancers controlling the opening period of play.
The second period saw the offense come to life for each side as 4 goals in total would be scored in the middle frame.
The scoring would start early on from the Lincoln Stars as veteran forward Jack Larrigan cashes in on an odd man rush opportunity after a Libor Nemec turnover in the neutral zone to give Lincoln the 1-0 advantage.
The Stars would not be done as shortly thereafter Lincoln veteran forward German Yavash puts one backdoor past Kochendorfer to stretch Lincoln's lead 2-0.
However, the Lancers would come right back with a goal of their own as forward Ethan Fredericks would attempt to pass it on an odd man rush opportunity, but the puck would ricochet off a Lincoln skate and deflect past Shostak to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
Later, in the second Lincoln would get back out in front by two with forward Aiden Janz burying one after an ill-advised pinch made in the neutral zone by the Lancers' defense.
Lincoln would be up 3-1 going into the third period.
The third period brought a lot of what the first did, much of which once again the Lancers controlled.
However, like the first the third would be scoreless leading to a 3-1 Stars victory despite the Lancers out-shooting the Stars in the game 31-24.
The Lancers will be back with more preseason action tomorrow night against the Fargo Force at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. Puck drop is 8:00 PM CST.
