MADISON, WI. – The Lancers were back at Bob Suter Capitol Ice Arena tonight (11/4) for a rematch with the Madison Capitols after falling by a score of 6-1 yesterday.
Lucas Szyszka, who was acquired this past week in a transaction with the Muskegon Lumberjacks get the go-ahead for his debut between the pipes for the Lancers as he looked to help his team avoid the sweep.
The first period was clean and hard-fought as neither team got a man-advantage opportunity and were unable to find the back of the net as the two teams sat scoreless at the break. Lancers led in shots 10-7 through 20 minutes.
The second frame brought high-intensity hockey from both sides, but solid goaltending from Szyszka and Carsen Musser for Madison kept the scoring silent for the majority of the period, including a potential save of the year by Szyszka five minutes into the period.
The ice was broken at the 15:20 mark of the period was Will Elger scored glove side on a breakaway off feeds from Jamison Sluys and Ty Campbell. Sending Omaha into the third period up 1-0.
Some pushing and shoving after the whistle handed the Caps the first and only power-play of the game thus far, but the Lancers were able to shut down the seventh-ranked power-play.
The Lancers were able to hold their one goal lead until the 13:29 mark of the final period where Rainers Rullers scored his second goal of the season off a feed from Max Nagel to lock the game at one goal apiece.
When overtime came around, the Lancers were slammed with being down two men for the first minute, but were able to kill off both penalties without any issue. However, at that point in overtime, Madison had the momentum and kept it for most of the overtime period.
The Capitols out shot Omaha 9-0 in that overtime period, but Szyszka remained strong, pushing the game into shootout.
The shootout went a staggering 12 rounds, as Sam Scheetz and Will Elger were able to score in the fourth and eighth rounds, however, immediately following their goals, James Hong and Brendan Lamb were able to answer, pushing the shootout further.
Finally, Aleksi Kivioja netted what would be the game-winner in the first half of the 12
th round, followed by a failed attempt by Gavin Uhlenkamp. Handing Omaha their first victory of the 2023-24 season in shootout fashion, by a score of 2-1.
The Lancers will be back for midweek action on Thursday, November 9
th for a home game against the Sioux City Musketeers. Puck drop is set for 7:05PM CST. That game can be caught on Mixlr and FloSports.
