LINCOLN, NE. – The Lancers started the two game, road trip weekend in Lincoln to take on the Stars for their third meeting of the season. Within the first two matchups, the squads are both 1-1-0-0 as both teams won their games at home in dominant fashion. With the first meeting being a 6-1 victory for the Stars at the Ice Box, followed by a 4-1 Omaha victory back at Liberty First Credit Union Arena just a week ago.
With the officials allowing last week's game to get a bit out of hand in the closing minutes, it lead people to expect a very physical game tonight (11/4).
Despite some solid puck movement in both attacking zones, both squads came out empty handed through the opening period as shots on goal was just a mere 7-6.
Tensions were raised towards the tail end of the first as DJ Hart took a shot at Griffin Jurecki in front of Lincoln netminder, Cameron Whitehead. No penalties were handed out and the period expired scoreless.
The second period of play was more physical as there were five penalties total, but both penalty kills stood strong and kept the puck out of the net.
However, Lincoln managed to find the only goal of the night on even strength. A low one-timer by Keaton Peters off feeds from Daniel Sambuco and Boston Buckberger snuck its way by the leg pad of Omaha goaltender, Michael Hrabal, to capture a 1-0 lead that the Stars carried into the second intermission.
The third period brought even more action physically as penalty minutes more than doubled in the third period alone. In the process, three rejections occurred.
James Jurcev and Evan Werner were ejected after a checking from behind call against Werner, that lead to Jurcev picking up an instigator penalty, leading to his ejection after triggering a fight. And later in the period, Charlie Lurie earned a major penalty for boarding with a game misconduct.
Despite 14 third period shots, the Lancers could not get the puck past Whitehead, as he earned himself a 30 save shutout in the 1-0 Stars victory.
As for Hrabal, he played another stellar game, stopping 27 of 28 shots faced, improving his goals against average to 1.83 through seven starts. And causing a rise in his save percentage, which now sits at 0.944%
The Lancers will be back at it tomorrow (11/5) in Des Moines for a matchup with the Des Moines Buccaneers. Puck drop is set for 6:00PM. That game can be caught on FloSports and Mixlr.
