SIOUX CITY, IA. – The Omaha Lancers look to complete their regular season on a high note this weekend, as they kick off a two-game series in Sioux City to take on the Musketeers. Sioux City currently sits safely in fifth place in the western conference standings. Leading Des Moines by five points, and trails Tri-City by 11. Meaning that regardless of what occurs this weekend, the Musketeers will be hitting the road come Monday for the western conference quarterfinals.
The Lancers started the opening period with some offensive momentum, pulling ahead in the shot count 3-0 in the opening two minutes. But, Sioux City received the first power-play of the night, and took the early lead.
A feed from Grant Slukynsky found Kaden Shahan down low, who tracked the puck through a crowd and beat Lancers' netminder Liam Beerman top shelf for the 1-0 lead. A lead they would ride into the first intermission.
The Lancers started the second period on a two-man advantage for a brief time, but couldn't capitalize.
Shortly after returning to full strength, Sioux City Captain, Grant Slukynsky knocked in his 19
th goal of the season off a feed from Tyler Hotson to extend the Musketeers' lead to 2-0. However, that lead did not hold long.
Less than two minutes later, Nick Pierre crossed into the Lancers' attacking end and found Jamison Sluys who scored to pull Omaha within one, and to hand himself his first USHL goal.
Over half a period passed with the score reading 2-1. Then both teams got to work, netting three total goals within the last five minutes of the period.
Kaden Shahan netted two more goals just 1:17 apart to capture a hat trick, and to move the Sioux City lead to 4-1. But Nick Pierre managed to net an unassisted goal with just 1:53 left in the period to pull the Lancers back to within two, ending two periods with a 4-2 score.
Jamison Sluys schemed up a play in the Lancers' offensive end early in the third period, setting up Reese Laubach for a beautiful, top shelf goal just 1:40 in to make it a 4-3 contest. Handing Sluys his first multi-point night in a Lancers' uniform.
Nearing the halfway mark of the final period, Slukynsky smacked a puck out of mid-air to pick up his second goal of the evening and cap off the scoring for the night, as Sioux City took the 5-3 victory.
The Lancers will close out the 2022-23 season Saturday, April 22
nd, at 6:05PM CST. in a rematch against the Sioux City Musketeers. That game can be caught on FloSports and Mixlr.
