LINCOLN, NE. – The Lancers finally wrapped up their month-long road trip tonight (3/10) at the Ice Box in Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Stars.
With coming off six straight road games, the Lancers found themselves on a five-game losing streak, with their most recent win dating back to February 17
th which was a 4-2 victory over the Madison Capitols.
The Stars also find themselves in the gutter with dropping seven of their last eight games, including being 1-2-0-0 in their current home stand.
With both teams looking to get back in the win column, and playoff crunch-time currently in the atmosphere, tonight's matchup will set the tone for the rest of the weekend series between these two squads.
The first period of play concluded with minimal offensive action from both sides as the shot count was just 6-3 in favor of the Stars. But, with those six shots on goal, Klavs Veinbergs was able to net one with just 1:29 left to play in the period with Jared Mangan and Jack Larrigan on the assists to give Lincoln the 1-0 lead through 20 minutes of play.
The Stars came out strong in the second frame with Tanner Ludtke netting a shot off the left post to extend the Lincoln lead to 2-0. Followed up by Veinbergs tipping in his second goal of the night to make it a 3-0 game just 4:02 into the second period.
Larrigan picked up an assist on the second goal by Veinbergs, as he joined him with owning a multi-point night through 40 minutes.
Following the third goal of night for the Stars, Lancers' netminder, Michael Hrabal was taken out of the game and replaced with Kevin Pasche who was able to slam the door for the remainder of the period, holding the Lancers three-goal deficit into the second intermission.
The Stars bounced back out in the third period to increase their lead to four off a one-timer from Jared Mangan for his 11
th goal of the year. Once again, Larrigan came in on the assist for his third of the night.
Under a minute later the Lancers made their way onto the score sheet with a coast-to-coast, unassisted goal from Riley Rosenthal to pull Omaha back within three, making it a 4-1 game with just under 15 minutes to play.
Fast paced back-and-forth play ensued for the next eight minutes before Boston Buckberger slammed home a shot on the power-play to force the Lincoln lead back up to four, making it a 5-1 game. Mason Marcellus and Doug Grimes picked up the helpers, and Lincoln took game one of the two game weekend series.
The Lancers will be back on home-ice for the first time in just over a month on Saturday, March 11
th for a 6:05PM CST. puck drop with the Stars as Omaha will look to split the weekend series. That game can be streamed on FloSports and Mixlr.
