SIOUX FALLS, SD. – The Lancers headed north today (1/14) for their third meeting of the 2022-23 season with the Sioux Falls Stampede; their second at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Lancers were looking to bounce back after a 4-1 loss to the Sioux City Musketeers the night before (1/13) in Omaha, as the Lancers barely escaped being shutout for the second time this season with Charlie Lurie notching his tenth goal of the season at the 16:14 mark of the third period.
The first period of play was very neck-and-neck as the shots on goal resulted in a 10-9 lead for Omaha. And although they went 0-for-2 on the man-advantage, they found the back of the net with just 2:06 left in the period.
After the final cleared puck on the Sioux Falls penalty kill, goaltender Kevin Pasche left the puck for William Smith who quickly chipped it along to Alex Bump. Bump skated the puck end-to-end and blew a wrist shot by the glove of Stampede netminder, Xavier Medina to take the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The even play carried in to the second period with both offenses being completely silenced as the Lancers headed into the second intermission with the same 1-0 lead they had after 20 minutes.
Medina and Pasche remained very sharp between the pipes with Pasche turning away 11 second period shots on goal, as Medina did the same to 13.
The third period followed the same pace as the first 40 minutes. Only this time, Sioux Falls managed to net one.
Just shy of the halfway mark of the period, the Stampede found themselves on a powerplay where Nick Ring found Sam Harris at the attacking goal line, who move the puck out front to Issac Gordon for the one-timer past Pasche to tie the game at one goal apiece. The same score that would close out regulation.
The overtime period was controlled by Sioux Falls overall, putting up five overtime shots compared to the Lancers' two.
It took until the 4:51 mark of the 3-on-3 play and a man advantage for the Stampede to score the game-winner, as Maddox Fleming went short-side high on Pasche for the game winner. Allowing the Stampede to snag the extra point in the 2-1 overtime win.
The Lancers record goes to 10-16-4-2 while the Stampede improve to 13-15-2-2 on the year, moving up into sixth place in the western conference standings.
The Lancers are back in action in Omaha on Friday, January 20
th for the start of a home-and-home series with the Tri-City Storm. Puck drop is set for 7:05PM CST. That game can be caught on FloSports and Mixlr.
