SIOUX CITY, IA. – After two straight matchups between the Omaha Lancers and the Sioux City Musketeers at Liberty First Credit Union Arena, the Lancers returned to Tyson Event Center for the first time since November 23
rd, which resulted in a 3-2 overtime loss for the Lancers.
On the season as a whole, the Lancers are currently 3-0-1-0 against the Musketeers, capturing an 2-1 overtime win on October 15
th, a 4-2 victory on December 2
nd, and lastly, a 1-0 nail-biter of a win back on December 16
th.
Last season, the Lancers only managed to take down Sioux City twice, one of which was an overtime thriller in Omaha, the other was a 3-2 New Year's Eve win, a game the Lancers would attempt to duplicate tonight.
However, the Lancers face unique circumstances heading into this one with their bus breaking down before leaving the Liberty First Credit Union Arena parking lot, causing them to have to push an original 6:05PM start time, to a 7:00PM puck drop. And with the Lancers not arriving until 6:20PM, they would not be able to go through their entire off-ice warm-up session.
The first period kicked off the worst way possible for the Lancers as Sioux city netted each of their first three shots, leading them to goals from Garrett Brown, Ryan Conmy and Ben Poitras, giving the Musketeers a 3-0 lead just 1:46 into the game.
Following the Musketeers' third goal, the Lancers opted to use their timeout for the game. And after some words of encouragement from Head Coach,
David Wilkie, the boys bounced back.
Six minutes later, the Lancers began a stretch of five unanswered goals.
Starting at the 7:08 mark of the second period, Reese Laubach netted his fourth of the year on a backhander past Axel Mangbo, which made it a 3-1 game.
Before the end of the period Griffin Jurecki and Nate Benoit found the back of the net, locking the game up at three goals apiece entering the first intermission.
Following the first period, Charlie Lurie, who already had an assist on the night continued the Lancers unanswered goal streak with two for himself, extending the Lancers' lead to 5-3.
Less than a minute later, Sioux City struck again with a goal from behind the goal line from Easton Zueger, who banked a shot off the leg pad of Lancers, goaltender, Michael Hrabal, pulling the Musketeers to within one heading into the third period.
The Lancers failed to score on the power-play they had to kick off the final period of play. Leading to a lot of offensive momentum for the Musketeers.
At the halfway mark of the final period, Tyler Hotson buried a rebound for the Musketeers to lock the game up at five, making it a tie game for the first time in over 23 minutes.
Just over a minute later, Lurie capitalized once more on a one-timer from the right-side face-off circle to regain the league. He then followed that up with the empty netter, capping off a five-point night (4-1-5) and leading the Lancers to a 7-5 comeback victory.
Lurie was not alone with having a productive night as Reese Laubach collected a five-point night himself with a goal and four assists, and Adam Cardona, Justin Stupka and Griffin Jurecki grabbed a pair of points as well.
The Lancers will be back in action on January 6
th in Tri-City to take on the Storm for their first matchup of 2023. Puck drop is at 7:05PM CST. Coverage available on FloSports and Mixlr.
