TRI-CITY EDGES OUT OMAHA IN 3-2 LOSS

Second Period Haunts Omaha Once Again.

OMAHA NE- The Omaha Lancers took on the Tri-City Storm Saturday night at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. The Lancers had come into this game losing 5 of their last 6 regular season meetings with the Storm. However, Omaha holds an overall regular season record of 82-65-5-6 against Tri-City dating back to the fall of '02 coming into tonight's contest. The Lancers had come off of back-to-back wins with the most recent win coming last night over the Sioux City Musketeers. The other win being a shootout win over the league's best Fargo Force last Saturday night. Meanwhile the Storm had come fresh off a 4-2 loss to the Des Moines Buccaneers last night in Urbandale.

The first period had plenty of action, and strong play coming from the Lancers early on, as they would control the puck through most of the opening frame.

Scoring however, would open with ex-Lancer Evan Werner, as Werner would dance through Omaha defenseman Max Wattvil, as uncharacteristically; Wattvil would not body up on the puck carrier, as Werner took full advantage making it 1-0 Tri-City.

However, Omaha would answer, and ironically it was forward Drew Montgomery who the Lancers acquired from Tri-City for Evan Werner in a trade deal just a couple of weeks ago. Montgomery would put it home with a backhand wrap around goal which would make it 1-1.

The first period clearly illustrated how well the trade deal between Tri-City and Omaha has worked out for both sides.

The second period woes would continue for Omaha, as Tri-City would dominate the second frame.

Early on however, Lancer forward Andon Cerbone would nearly cash in as the puck would sit on the goal line before being whisked away.

Later on, it was Tri-City who would score off the stick of Evan Werner once again to make it 2-1 Storm.

Tri-City was not done, as forward Nick Roukounakis would deflect one out in front of Omaha netminder, Michael Hrabal to stretch Tri-City's lead to 3-1. Lancer goaltender Kevin Pasche would be put in relief of Hrabal following that goal to end the second period.

Omaha would snap back out of it in the third and final frame, starting with a goal coming from Andon Cerbone who was crashing the net after forward Alex Bump made a beautiful backhand pass to find Cerbone to cut the deficit at 3-2.

That lone third period goal was all the Lancers could muster however, as Tri-City would hold on to win it 3-2 in what had a playoff like atmosphere.

The Lancers are back in action Friday night at the Viaero Center in Kearney, Nebraska, as the Lancers will look to avenge tonight's loss to the Tri-City Storm. Puck drop is at 7:05 CST. You can catch the game on Mixlr or FloSports.
